Early Work

early work

On a city tower (het Torentje van Almelo).previously part of the Ten Cate textile factory, at night when it is dark, the image of passing ships slowly appears and disappears. Every ship has its own name, which emphasizes its individual character as a symbol of the passing of life. Ships are archetypal images, but because of the way they are mounted and represented here they surpass the personal and touch universal values.
Besides the restlessness in the movement and the expression of force, there is a meditative aspect in the observing of the passing ships, the waves in the water and the changing light.
Hurkmans was inspired by the history and current situation of Almelo, a previously rich textile industry city which was reached by man made waterways.
The title "Endurance" refers to a quality which is typical for the history of the town, but the concept also stands for an internal quality of character.
During the day the tower was hermetically closed by a piece of white canvas which made the interior space invisible. Only at night when darkness came, it gave away its secret and generated new thoughts and fantasies.
