The White Shroud,
2008
installation
exhibition Grandeur, Sonsbeek 2008
second-hand clothes: cotton, linen, rayon
300 x 800 cm
The White Shroud was shown together with the Flag of Compassion in the summer of 2008 at the international sculpture show in Sonsbeek, Arnhem, The Netherlands. Visually the work is closely linked to earlier pieces like Dear Son, 2003.
The White Shroud is made of used, white clothes, mostly baby’s and children’s shirts and blouses. The clothes have been sewn together – with the emphasis on the neck opening – and form a kind of shroud, 3 x 8 meters in size.
The people who used these clothes are absent; there only seems to be a condensed history of vulnerability and innocence.
