Biography

1954 Born in Deurne, The Netherlands.
1974-77 Studies art history, philosophy, psychology, art materials and craftsmanship at the Academy for Visual Art Education in Amersfoort.
1977-81 Studies at the Academy for Art and Design, St. Joost in Breda.
1992-93 Lives in New York, and participates in the international studio program of The Institute for Contemporary Art, P.S.1 Museum.
1990 - to date Hurkmans is Professor at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Academy of Art and Design, Amsterdam.
In addition she has often been visiting lecturer and artist in residence in The Netherlands and the USA, including New York, Boston and Minneapolis. She has also travelled extensively in Europe, South America, the middle east and Asia.

Hurkmans' work is included in many important public and private collections. In addition, she has also realized important public commissions in The Netherlands and abroad, including a sculpture for the ‘Parque de la Memoria’ in Buenos Aires (presently under construction).

She currently lives in The Netherlands and France.
