The Pavilions (Paviljoens) in Almere is composed of several connected, long building parts on pillars, situated in a deserted and uncultivated terrain. The building sections look like waiting rooms or train wagons stationed on a sideline. The architectural setting of the inner space, on the one hand, is an open structure, a steel frame, that makes the connection with the outside totally transparent, while on the other hand, the inside walls give the space a feeling of safety and security. This open and at the same time closed structure was an important factor in making the work.
The artist once wrote: 'The structure is there to make evident the presence of the immaterial.'
